View from the Bar

Alex, Rose & Crown, Tunbridge Wells, UK 1995

Half a lifetime ago, I was a barman and Alex was one of my regular customers. I think he chose to hold the soda siphon because I had occasionally been known to give him a squirt from time to time. I quite like this as a ‘character’ portrait. Because I was using 120 roll film and a sharp lens, the actual print is quite detailed – I think I selenium toned it.

As I remember it, I took this with my Rolleiflex and a Metz hammerhead flashgun.

Middle-aged white bloke. Wanders around with a camera (sometimes just his phone) taking pictures. Some he likes, most he doesn’t. Likes animals. Likes the seaside, not so sure he likes the sea.
