On Photography

Some scattered thoughts/comments on photography.

1. While photographs are supremely specific, the best photos connect to broader issues.

2. Most photos could be improved by being a bit closer to the subject. You could interpret this as meaning: remove the unnecessary.

3. A photograph begins with the “what” you are trying to show. The equipment is “how” the picture is taken. You need them both, but the “what” comes before the “how”. Sometimes people try to do things the other way around.

4. Only carry what you absolutely need. This changes all the time. Which is why photography tends to bring out the gearhead in people. For every performance you go to, I guarantee someone in the audience wishes they had something they’d left at home.
