Spring Blossom, Wokingham

Spring Blossom, Wokingham, Berkshire March 2018

Time passes. I think we have all noticed that. Recently, on my morning walks, I have noticed some trees blossoming. But this photo is from three years ago. It was just a quick grab photo on my way to work. As you can see the light was very bright and contrasty, which made the blossoms stand out against the dark tree. Only the week before, there had been quite heavy snow, so the rapid change was quite remarkable. As I walked past, it was a quick snap with my iPhone and then on.

Morning Sun, West Sussex

Morning Sun, West Sussex August 2020

How has your life changed in the last few months?

One of the things I like about life now, are my early morning walks on the parkland near where I live. When I was working, my morning was dominated by my need to get to work – which was always some way away from where I lived. And I’m sure lots of people who lived miles away would have rushing to get to work near where I lived.

Anyway, a pleasure of the last 6 months has been the change from spring into summer. It has got light earlier and earlier and, obviously, warmer too.

A challenge of this photo is the change from the original to this form – for some reason, the shadows looked “richer” if that makes sense. I still like the effect of the light on the grass and the gravel.

Leaves, West Sussex

Sycamore Leaves, West Sussex May 2020

Like most people, my outdoor photography has been restricted by the lock-down. Which is why I have been posting pictures of things I’ve seen on my exercise walks. I could post things from the past – places I’ve been – but it feels irrelvant at the moment.

This is a picture of some leaves on a sycamore tree. Initially I thought it was a maple (because of the shape), but if you look closely, you can see some seeds – which is the giveaway.

Another Walk in the Park

In the Morning, West Sussex April 2020

I saw this when I went for a walk a couple of days ago. It was about 6.30am.

Sometimes I like to listen to something when I’m walking and sometimes I prefer silence. My favourite sound is the birds singing before sunrise (remember back to walking home after a night out).

Mountains in Yunnan

Dali, Yunnan, China 2015

This is another photo from my trip to Yunnan in 2015. Yes, I have this as my banner, but thought I would write about it.

The path the photo was taken from led to a large lake. In the foreground, you can see paddies which were in cultivation. In the background, you can the mountains which surround Dali, casting shadows, which when mixed with a little dust make interesting patterns of light.

This all came about because we could see the lake and naively believed “it couldn’t be that far away”. Well, it could. It could be a good 2 1/2 hour walk, with the sun slowly setting behind us as we arrived. I remember thinking, “It’s a bit cold now”. And then it was night…..

Technical info. This photo is a composite of 3 pictures from the X100. It looks like a fairly faithful rendering of the view from the road. Perhaps next year, my New Year’s Resolution will be to carry a studio tripod with me (like one of those people who say: My sharpest lens is a tripod). Might not make it to make the next lot of resolutions!
