Opening for Death Cab for Cutie, Beijing

Once upon a time, I used to go to quite a few concerts – I think this one was about ten years ago. I lived in Beijing at the time where there are quite a few auditoriums for bands to perform at and each one had its own challenges if you wanted to take photos.

In this situation, the challenge was that you were quite a long way from the stage – so you need a long lens which some venues won’t allow you to bring in. In this case I had a Sony sel 55-210 which doesn’t tend to do well in online reviews. It is plasticky and feels cheap – but it has stabilisation (which is handy in the dark) and here at least, was sharp enough.

These guys were the warmup for Death Cab for Cutie – and I think they did – ok.

In a rash moment, I splashed out for VIP tickets to see Shakira and as a consequence, I was not that far from the stage. VIP feels like the wrong word. She was very popular at the time – i think “Hips Don’t Lie” had just come out.

But, it did mean that I could see what was going on without looking at a screen. It also meant that I could take ok pictures with my compact camera (a Fujifilm F30).

It was a nice concert. My impression was Shakira was very professional and everything went without a hitch.
